Haynes is much more interested in the women who are more invested in the events, whether as instigators or victims, and the conflicted choices they make in order to survive or simply stake their claim on history. It’s left to Calliope – Haynes’s framing character, and the closest thing to a true authorial proxy – to articulate the venom felt by the book’s characters for Helen as she emerges, shrugs off the bloodshed caused in her name, and returns to her husband. When Helen does appear, she is mesmerising, confident, almost bored of the way she can control and manipulate people.
